'Daybreak on the Gibb River Road' is a limited edition reduction linoprint. It captures a memory of an early morning roadside pitstop on the Kimberly region's Gibb River Road when we witnessed an energetic flock of zebra finches.
This is a five layer reduction print. It is one of a limited edition of 25. A reduction linoprint is made from a single block of lino that’s carved and printed in stages. You start by cutting away the areas you want to keep light and print the first colour. Then you carve the block further and print the next colour on top, and so on, working from light to dark. With each stage more of the block is cut away, so by the end there’s almost nothing left of it. For this reason you can never reproduce the print once the final layer has been printed.
Rowan is committed to slow art and appreciates the joy and satisfaction that comes with working by hand. Rowan prints all of her original linoprints in the front sunroom of her house in Lewisham, Sydney. It is a small space (no room for a big press), but a happy and productive one, proving that you don't need a lot of room to make beautiful art.
